Description

As we draw towards the end of the lectionary year, the people who put the lectionary together are seeking to draw our attention to who God is, and how we should worship God. In the first two resources, we are encouraged to worship God and to concentrate on Thanksgiving, or Gratitude Prayer.

Many churches do not often spend time focussing on the Psalms, but they are incredibly helpful ways to focus on prayer, and to help a community develop their prayer lives. The Psalms contain our words to God, and God’s words to us. There are different kinds of Psalm: of supplication, of lament and of praise. This week’s Psalm, number 145 is a great prayer of praise to God. Singing praises to God is a practice in many churches, and it’s an ancient tradition, at least as old as King
David who is credited with writing a number of Psalms of praise.

The Psalm ends with a great crescendo: ‘My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.’ It is as though the whole of creation is singing the praises of God. What prayers of praise will your community give to God?
